Well-Law Stories
The Well-Law Team used its combined knowledge and experience in their roles as law student, lawyer, paralegal, law professor, and social worker to create the Well-Law Stories. The Stories use composite narratives to bring to life how the Well-Law App might be used by law students, law faculty and staff, lawyers, and legal professionals.
Imagine Charles
Charles is a 2L who left a career as a financial planner to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer. He is doing well in law school, but struggles with panic attacks. Beyond that, heâs lost count of the times heâs been told âyou are so articulate,â as if itâs a compliment. Heâd like to point out the stereotype behind that statement, but just says âthank you.â These microaggressions take a toll on his mental health. Another student of color shared that she uses the Well-Law app for self-care and to help cope with race-based trauma. Charles gives it a try and finds that the mix of Well-Skills and daily affirmations help him to cultivate positive coping strategies and build resilience.
Imagine Jordan.
Jordan is the managing director of a legal aid office. They work with staff who engage clients coping with trauma and crisis every day. And many staff have their own personal challenges as they manage the mounting workload and anxiety thatâs common among legal aid offices. Seeing the growing stress among the team, Jordan realized the need to integrate wellbeing into the workplace culture. Along with instituting more flexible working arrangements, Jordan gave all employees the Well-Law app for its emphasis on wellness and leadership coaching. Jordan was pleased to learn that several staff members had formed a lunch group to discuss Well-Talk topics and engage in office stretching breaks together.
Imagine Anna.
Anna is passionate about law school. After growing up through a traumatizing divorce, she wanted to become a family law attorney to help others through difficult times. But past childhood trauma left Anna with high levels of anxiety and âImposter Syndrome,â the sense that she doesnât belong in law school. After receiving the Well-Law app, Anna listened to Well-Talks on trauma and imposter syndrome. The Talks helped her understand her experiences and mindset and also gave her tools, such as yoga, to manage her anxiety. After a few months, Anna feels more aware and calmer.
Imagine Toni.
Toni is a second year tenure-track assistant professor. She expected a challenge, but she wasnât prepared for the grueling path toward tenure. She works more than 60 hours per week preparing and teaching classes, producing scholarship, and attending meetings, which leaves little time for family or getting to know her new city. Toni feels overwhelmed and is afraid that sheâs heading toward burnout. One day she decides to check out the Well-Law app distributed to everyone at the law school. After exploring the resources on boundaries, she used the âsetting healthy boundariesâ guide to help her set and maintain better boundaries in her life. She also found that journaling helped her find needed perspective.
Imagine Matt
Matt is a paralegal at a large law firm. Itâs his first real job after college and heâs consistently billing the most hours among all the paralegals. And while he works hard, he plays hard too â which is becoming a problem. Despite a decent salary (more money than heâs ever seen), his credit card balances are starting to rise and he hasnât managed to save. A friend at the firm suggested he check out the Well-Law app that was provided a few months ago. Matt began his own Personal Wellness Plan which helped him take a fresh look at his financial wellness. Then a Well-Skills exercise on goal setting helped him see the need to plan for the long term.
Imagine Carlos.
Carlos spends a lot of time in the library. At the start of the semester, his law school provided the Well-Law app to all students. At first, he didnât think it was for him. Then came final exams and Carlos struggled with high levels of anxiety, stress, and migraines. He decided to give the Well-Law app a try. He arrived at school 30 minutes before each exam so he could listen in his car to a Well-Law meditation and do a breathing exercise before heading in to take his exams. He attributes his ability to move calmly through his exams and his academic success to his new-found habits for self-care from the Well-Law app.
